Beagle Breeders – Choosing & Good One

July 03, 2020 2 min read

If you want a Beagle puppy, you should only consult responsible Beagle Breeders. You should never purchase a puppy from a pet store, or from a “backyard breeder”. This is a term given to breeders that are only breeding Beagles to make a quick buck. They do not care about the health and wellbeing of the breed, and won’t have a problem with inbreeding their Beagles.

Not to sure how you will be able to tell backyard Beagle breeders from ones that are reputable? No problem. The following is what you should be looking for when visiting a breeder:

  • Beagle puppies that look happy and healthy
  • Beagles that are clean
  • The premise is clean
  • The parents of the litter are healthy and meet the breed standard
  • The breeder only breeds Beagles and no other type of dog
  • A breeder should be willing to answer all of your questions
  • A breeder who asks you questions about your background with dogs, and about your lifestyle and interest in Beagles.

Now that you know the basic gist of how to tell good Beagle breeders from the bad, here are more specific facts you need to know when dealing with a breeder:

  • The breeder should be registered with a national kennel club or Beagle club of your nation
  • The breeder should freely show you the sire and dam of the liter if you ask to see them and they are available.
  • The breeder should tell you the size of the original liter if you ask. They should also inform you of what happened to the missing puppies
  • The breeder only breeds one liter per year if they only have one female
The breeder does not support interbreeding
  • The breeder provides a guarantee to take back the pup, or provide a refund or rebate if the dog can not be registered, or becomes extremely ill within the first year of owning.
  • The breeder should provide you with the Beagle puppies medical information, including the certificate from the Vet
  • The breeder will provide you with the dogs pedigree so you can see if there are any health defects in the line you should be aware of
  • The breeder will give an official signed certificate that includes 3 – 4 generations and the pedigree.

There is no question that purchasing a puppy from reputable Beagle Breeders will be costly. However, the price speaks for itself. It covers the Vet bills, and registration, as well as any training the breeder gave the dog. Like everything in life, you get what you pay for, a Beagle is no exception.

If you are not sure where you can find ethical Beagle breeders, the best place to start looking is online with your national kennel club, or the Beagle club of your nation. They will provide you with lists of breeders who are registered with them.
